Bagaimana Memperolehi RM1,000,000

Bak kata orang… malu bertempat lah. Siapa malu, dialah yang rugi.

FEATURE ARTICLE: Don't become an ex-millionaire------------------------------------------------------------It's so sad and tragic. After years and years of saving money and careful frugal living, you see all your money disappear in a flash. Just because of one error in judgement - unfortunately in this case, a fatal error - you are now facing a bleak and uncertain future. One day you are a millionaire and the next, you've joined the ex-millionaires club.Whatever you do folks, make sure that this NEVER happens to you. This is not a case of having loved and lost. This is a case of losing and losing. Hard as it may read, but it is better not to taste the big money than to have it all, and then lose it. After all, you never really lose what you never had.So let's look at the three reasons why many folks have been relegated to becoming ex-millionaires. In the hope that it will not happen to you.1. Starting a business Starting a business is perhaps the number one reason why a lot of millionaires are now ex-millionaires. Particularly those who have never been in business before. I realize the temptations are there. You have the cash. Why not earn more returns from your money by starting a business? After all, if the business really takes off, your money will shoot to the heavens. But think again and again. Then think one more time. First question - what do you know about running a business? If you cannot even answer this question, then case closed. Keep your hard earned money in your pocket. As mentioned in the book "Millionaires are from a different Planet!", 80 percent of businesses close up shop in the first year alone. After five years, only five percent of businesses will remain open. Now, that's a mighty high rate of failure. In short, business is already very, very risky. Don't make it any worse by opening up shop if you don't know anything about the business. As a side interest, check out the list of businesses yours truly has been offered - property development, importing furniture, insurance agent, music shop, CD recording, music studio, managing a rock band, Amway, Cosway, Internet MLMs, car repair and best of all, cow breeding! While I'm sure these businesses can make money, what I know about them is as much as I know about the sex habits of earthworms - nothing. So thank you very much, I think I'll keep my money this time around.2. Inappropriate investments Making inappropriate investments is another culprit. Someone comes around saying why be happy with 10% return from ASB when you can make 30% (or more!) in ... (fill in the blanks). The "investment" can be futures, options, currency trading, commodities, properties, time-sharing, gold, silver, opals and the latest - Internet ventures. If you love yourself and your family, take my advice - keep the chequebook and shut the door. All the above - while it can make a lot of money for some selected professionals - will only drain your bank account like a vacuum cleaner on a jihad. Folks, any investment that is too good to be true, is exactly that - not true. For starters, no one is gonna broadcast on any investment that can provide a return of 30% plus per year. They'll be too busy trying to keep it to themselves!3. Buying expensive toys After years of living from hand to mouth, coming into some big money can drive folks wild to the ninth degree. I'm sure you have read reports on some of the big spending Felda settlers. In one extreme case, after getting the money for their land, two sixty plus year olds went out and bought themselves super bikes! Many others went on a similar buying spree for themselves and their children - gleaming new Protons, big huge bungalows including swimming pools, home theatre systems, gold chains a foot long and just as thick, and any other expensive toys you can think of. All these wild spending will only take them to one lonely club - the ex-millionaires club. What is worse is that it led them to the ultimate poorhouse - no land, no money. These are just but three reasons why some folks become ex-millionaires. Now that you are forewarned, make sure you do not join the list. Stay a millionaire. It's much, much better. For starters, you have more money!------------------------------------------------------------ 2. QUOTE OF THE MONTH ------------------------------------------------------------ "It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up." Â * Vince Lombardi, Sr. *

How to Become As Rich As Bill Gates

As a graduate student in computer science at MIT earning a $1600/month research stipend, I feel amply qualified to instruct the entire Internet on the art of becoming as rich as Bill Gates (check the Wealth Clock to see how much he has right now). I get my confidence from Dr. Leo Buscaglia, author of Love, Born for Love : Reflections on Loving, Living, Loving and Learning, and Bus 9 to Paradise. Dr. Buscaglia, our nation's most prominent lecturer on the subject of love, turns out to be divorced ("it was a very loving divorce").
Lesson 1: Choose Your Grandparents Carefully
"There are three ways to make money. You can inherit it. You can marry it. You can steal it."-- conventional wisdom in Italy William Henry Gates III made his best decision on October 28, 1955, the night he was born. He chose J.W. Maxwell as his great-grandfather. Maxwell founded Seattle's National City Bank in 1906. His son, James Willard Maxwell was also a banker and established a million-dollar trust fund for William (Bill) Henry Gates III.
In some of the later lessons, you will be encouraged to take entrepreneurial risks. You may find it comforting to remember that at any time you can fall back on a trust fund worth many millions of 1998 dollars.
Lesson 2: Choose Your Parents Carefully
"A young man asked an old rich man how he made his money. The old guy fingered his worsted wool vest and said, "Well, son, it was 1932. The depth of the Great Depression. I was down to my last nickel. I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the entire day polishing the apple and, at the end of the day, I sold the apple for ten cents. The next morning, I invested those ten cents in two apples. I spent the entire day polishing them and sold them at 5 pm for 20 cents. I continued this system for a month, by the end of which I'd accumulated a fortune of $1.37. Then my wife's father died and left us two million dollars." William Henry Gates, Jr. and Mary Maxwell were among Seattle's social and financial elite. Bill Gates, Jr. was a prominent corporate lawyer while Mary Maxwell was a board member of First Interstate Bank and Pacific Northwest Bell. She was also on the national board of United Way, along with John Opel, the chief executive officer of IBM who approved the inclusion of MS/DOS with the original IBM PC.
Remind your parents not to send you to public school. Bill Gates went to Lakeside, Seattle's most exclusive prep school where tuition in 1967 was $5,000 (Harvard tuition that year was $1760). Typical classmates included the McCaw brothers, who sold the cellular phone licenses they obtained from the U.S. Government to AT&T for $11.5 billion in 1994. When the kids there wanted to use a computer, they got their moms to hold a rummage sale and raise $3,000 to buy time on a DEC PDP-10, the same machine used by computer science researchers at Stanford and MIT.
Note: Recall that in the 1980s we venerated Donald Trump and studied his "art of the deal". If Donald Trump had taken the millions he inherited from his father and put it all into mutual funds, you'd never have had to suffer through one of his books. But he'd be just about as rich today.
Lesson 3: Acquire Research Results by Hiring and Buying Conventional (loser) economic wisdom holds that monopolies should spend heavily on research because they are in a position to capture the fruits of the research. But if you want to become as rich as Bill Gates, you have to remember that it is cheaper to wait for a small company to come up with something good and then buy them. In the old days, antitrust laws kept monopolies from buying potential competitors. But not anymore. When Microsoft products were threatened by network computers and Web-based applications, they simply bought WebTV and Hotmail.
Another good strategy is to hire the right people. Some of the guys who wrote Microsoft Windows had previous worked on window systems at Xerox PARC. So Xerox paid for the research; Microsoft paid only for development.
In the long run a tech company without research probably can't sustain its market leadership. So you'll eventually need to build something like research.microsoft.com (check out netscan.research.microsoft.com to see some interesting online community research).
Lesson 4: Let Other People Do the Programming If you're a great engineer, it can be frustrating to rely on other people to translate your ideas into reality. However, keep in mind that the entire Indian subcontinent is learning Java. And that if Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, and Sun products simply worked and worked simply, half of the world's current IT workers would be out of a job. You're not going to get rich being "just a coder." Especially working in painful low-level imperative languages such as C or Java. It might be worth writing your own SQL queries and HTML pages since these tend to be compact and easier than precisely specifying the work for another person to do. But basically you need to get good at thinking about whether a piece of software is doing something useful for the adopting organization and end-user. Bill Gates does code reviews, not coding.
[If you aren't sure that you need to be filthy rich and like to do some coding, see this old misguided article for more about what it might mean to be a great software engineer.]
Lesson 5: Train your new CEO If you're an intelligent curious person it can be painful to run a company of more than 50 people. You spend more time than you'd like repeating yourself, sitting in boring meetings, skimming over long legal documents in which you know there are errors but aren't sure how serious, etc. The temptation is to hand over the reins to the first "professional manager" who comes along. And that's what the standard venture capitalist formula dictates. But Bill Gates didn't do that. He hired Steve Ballmer in 1980 and gave him the CEO job 20 years later. Making money in the software products business requires domain expertise and a commitment to solving problems within that domain. Great tech companies are seldom built by non-technical management or professional managers who aren't committed to anything more than their paycheck. Adobe is another good example. The two founders were PhD computer science researchers from Xerox PARC who were passionate about solving problems in the publishing and graphics world. They are still guiding operations at Adobe.
Note that this is a principle that Old Economy companies have long understood. Jack Welch joined GE in 1961 and became CEO 20 years later. Sometimes an Old Economy company may pull in a few outsiders to senior positions but, because they have such stable bureaucracies underneath, they can more easily afford this than startups.
See Charles Ferguson's High Stakes, No Prisoners (1999) for a longer explanation of how hired-gun CEOs manage to kill software products companies.
Lesson 6: Focus on Profit
"At Hewlett-Packard, people, materials, facilities, money, and time are the resources available to us for conducting our business. By applying our skills, we turn these resources into useful products and services. If we do a good job, customers pay us more for our products than the sum of our costs in producing and distributing them. This difference, our profit, represents the value we add to the resources we utilize." -- David Packard in The HP Way Remembering to make a profit was tough in the dotcom 1990s but it turns out that Hewlett and Packard's ideas were right. Most of the management teams at dotcom businesses, by being disorganized, unintelligent, and ignorant, were subtracting value from the resources that they controlled.
How does one make money in the software products business? Simple. The necessary step is to build something that becomes part of information systems that generate value for organizations and end-users. Once you've created value you can extract a portion in lots of ways. You can be closed-source and charge a license fee. You can be open-source and charge for training, service, support, and extensions. But if you aren't getting your software product into important information systems, you don't have a prayer, no matter how slick your marketing materials.
If you're creative and diligent the software products business is extremely lucrative. If you're losing money, ask yourself what you're doing wrong. The answer is probably "plenty".
Lesson 7: Let the Venture Capitalists Schmooze Wall Street ...... but don't let them run your company. A profitable Microsoft Corporation brought in venture capitalists (VCs) at the last minute. They didn't need or spend the money but used the VCs to boost their valuation at the initial public offering, thus getting more money for the shares that they sold. Venture capitalists are dangerous because even the most successful might not know anything about business. Remember that there are tens of thousands of venture capitalists in this world. Assuming that they make random choices of companies in which to invest there will be a Gaussian curve of performance. Some firms will do consistently better than average even if everyone is guessing. Imagine that thousands of monkeys are flipping coins; some of the monkeys will get 10 heads in a row. These are the monkeys that will be celebrated for their insight. These are the monkeys whose track records will lead to uncritical cheerleading by underwriters and public investors. In bull markets such as we had in the 1990s nearly all the monkeys will be fairly consistent winners. But remember your next-door neighbor who made money in the stock market in 1985. He convinced himself that he had special insight and ability when actually he was only holding high-beta stocks in a rising market. So his foray into the commodities futures market wiped him out in the crash of '87.
Bottom line: successful software products companies spend most of their time listening to their customers and users rather than to venture capitalists.
[See "Money, Money, Money (and Investing)" for how the Gaussian curve works for mutual fund managers and also read Princeton Professor Burton Malkiel's A Random Walk Down Wall Street.]
Lesson 8: Self-Esteem is Not Job 1Gentility, politesse, decorum, and high self-esteem are wonderful. You can achieve all of these things within your organization. And then watch it be destroyed by competitors where frank and, if necessary, harsh criticism is encouraged. Technical people, even (and especially) those fresh out of school are always convinced that whatever they've developed, no matter how hare-brained, is perfect. It takes a technical person with good judgement to notice the flaws and it may require repeated and increasingly harsh delivery for the, uh, pinhead to realize his or her mistake.
Example: I once encountered a group of 6 people who called themselves "engineers." To solve what they thought was a new problem, they were going to build their own little database management system with their own query language that was SQL-like without being SQL. I pointed them to some published research by a gang of PhD computer scientists from IBM Almaden, the same lab that developed the RDBMS and SQL to begin with in the 1970s. The research had been done over a five-year period and yet they hadn't become aware of it during several months of planning. I pointed them to the SQL-99 standard wherein this IBM research approach of augmenting a standard RDBMS to solve the problem they were attacking was becoming an ISO standard. They ignored it and spent another few months trying to build their enormously complex architecture. Exasperated, I got a kid fresh out of school to code up some Java stored procedures to run inside Oracle. After a week he had his system working and ready for open-source release, something that the team of 6 "engineers" hadn't been able to accomplish in 6 months of full-time work. Yet they never accepted that they were going about things in the wrong way though eventually they did give up on the project.
An 1994 New Yorker article about Microsoft relates "If he strongly disagrees with what you're saying, [Gates] is in the habit of blurting out, 'That's the stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard!'". Jennifer New, a former Microsoft contractor, writes "Meetings with Bill or one of his top people are often replete with a barrage of expletives and other disdainful comments." (Salon, September 1997) My friends who work or have worked at Microsoft tell similar tales. But how different is this from other elite organizations?
When I arrived at MIT as a first-year graduate student in electrical engineering and computer science, I asked a professor for help with a research problem. He said "The reason that you've having trouble is that you don't know anything and you're not working very hard." A friend of mine was a surgery resident at Johns Hopkins. He complained to one of his teachers that he was having trouble concentrating because he'd been up all night for several nights in a row. The professor replied "Oh... does your pussy hurt?" According to Business Week, Jack Welch "encouraged near-brutal candor in the meetings he held [at GE]".
The bottom line: self-esteem is great but beware of creating a cozy home for unproductive people with bad ideas.
MorePlato addresses some of these issues in the first book of The Republic (available online from www.gutenberg.net). Socrates asserts that people who've inherited fortunes tend to be light with their money but that people who've made their fortunes "have a second love of money as a creation of their own, resembling the affection of authors for their own poems, or of parents for their children, besides that natural love of it for the sake of use and profit which is common to them and all men. And hence they are very bad company, for they can talk about nothing but the praises of wealth."
Socrates asks Cephalus, a wealthy old man, "What do you consider to be the greatest blessing which you have reaped from your wealth?" Cephalus replies that "The great blessing of riches, I do not say to every man, but to a good man, is, that he has had no occasion to deceive or to defraud others, either intentionally or unintentionally."
In the Decameron, Boccaccio writes "If you really want to make the big bucks, what you really need is a monopoly on the desktop operating system. But the Sherman Antitrust Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1 and 2, and Clayton Antitrust Act, 15 U.S.C. § 25, are real bitches."

Is Your Business Idea Worth a Business Plan?

Remember that the purpose of the Quick-Start Business Plan is to determine whether or not a particular business idea has the potential to become a viable business. So there are two more business plan questions that you have to ask yourself:

4. What are the obstacles to my business plan and are they surmountable?

Sometimes you have a business idea that seems sure-fire. You know there’s a market for it, you know you’ve got the edge on the competition and you know it will be a money maker – but there are showstopper problems that you just can’t get around.

You might, for instance, want to start a limo service, only to discover that you can’t get the licensing you need. Or want to improve an existing resort only to find that the necessary zoning change is impossible.

Or want to start a home-based business in your residence only to discover that home-based businesses are forbidden in your neighbourhood.

Take the time to fully investigate all the municipal, provincial and federal bylaws, regulations and laws that will affect your business plan. In some places, you can surmount various obstacles if you know the right people. But it may be that you just can’t do what you want to do where you are. At this point, you have the choice of abandoning your business plan, shelving it until a more favorable climate develops, or finding another more amenable place to do it.

Buying a business: Legal issues (of one kind or another) are a common reason for trying to sell a business. Make sure you do a search to see if there are any outstanding or past court cases involving the business you’re thinking of buying.

5. Do I have what I need to see this through?

Starting a business is gruelling. I can’t say it any plainer. You will probably work more hours than you ever have before and may have to keep doing it for longer than you thought possible – even if you buy an existing business. If you’re not prepared to make the personal commitment your business plan would take, or aren’t physically up to the challenge, shelve your business plan for the moment.

Cash flow is also an issue for many who start businesses. You need to have in hand not only the money to start your business, but the money to support yourself until your business takes off. While some deal with this issue by starting part-time businesses, working while starting a business can really test your endurance.

If money is the only need you’re missing, then it’s just a matter of finding the money you need. 8 Sources of Business Start Up Money tells you where to look.

If you’ve gotten all the way through question five of this quickie business plan, congratulations! You’ve got a viable business idea!

Where to from here? If you envision your business as a part-time venture and it doesn’t take an investment of funds above your comfort level, you might decide to plunge in, start the business, and see how it goes.

If you plan for this business to be a full-time venture or it requires funding, then you should work through a complete business plan. The Business Plan Outline will guide you through the process. The time and effort you spend working through a business plan will greatly increase your chances of starting a successful business.

5 questions(quick start business plan)

Maybe you don’t need to write a complete business plan. While many business plans are written to persuade bankers or investors to lend money, many other business plans are prepared just to see whether or not a proposed business idea can be turned into a viable business.

If that’s why you want to write a business plan, this quick-start business plan will work for you whether you’re starting a business from scratch or thinking of buying an existing business. Just answer these five questions to the best of your ability and you’ll know if this business idea is worth pursuing

1. Is there a market for it?

Many people want to start businesses selling products or providing services just because they always wanted to do that. But rule one of starting a business is that other people have to want to buy the product or service involved.

Otherwise, you’re trying to sell ice cream cones on a cold day – there’s no point in going any farther with this business plan.

Test your business idea by starting out small (such as trying to sell your products on eBay or at local markets/fairs) and doing some market research. Keep notes. If the results aren’t good, move on to another business idea.

Buying a business: You have a leg up here if you’re buying an established business with a proven market. The trick is ascertaining the truth of the information you’re being given.

2. What’s the profit potential of this business?

In other words, is there any money in it - or at least enough money to make it worth your while? You may have a flaming desire to crochet tablecloths, but if no one wants to buy the items you produce, there’s no profit in it.

Likewise, if the process is so time-consuming that you can only produce one a month, you’re not going to see enough of a profit to even make this a viable part-time business. Your business plan for this business idea ends right here.

Buying a business: Check the financials. How much money has this business made in the past? What are the projections for future income?

3. Is the market saturated?

There may be a market for the product or service you have in mind for your business plan, and plenty of potential profit – for those who are already doing it. Sometimes there’s just too much competition for any new business in the same business to prosper.

For instance, at one point my husband and I were thinking of starting a used bookstore in our small town. There already was one and just as we were in the process of putting our business plan together, another one opened. Looking at the potential size of our market, we shut our business plan down, figuring that there’d be no market space for a third used bookstore locally. (Later, a third such bookstore did open – but closed within six months.)

Study the competition carefully in light of your ideas for your new business. What exactly do they offer and what will you offer? How will you differentiate your products and/or services from theirs? How much of the market will you be able to get?

Buying a business: Just because a business has been profitable in the past is no guarantee that that business will continue to be profitable. Study the competition carefully. It may be that changes in market share or the difficulties of competing are why the owner wants to sell the business.

part 2( choosing a business)

These approaches are not entirely mutually exclusive. Let's start with the idea, rather than with formal research. Some of the possible sources for business ideas include:

Self-discovery. Find out what you're truly passionate about and figure out how to make a business out of it.
Inspiration. That idea that just popped into your head one day may not be so crazy after all.
Observation. Be constantly looking for unmet needs. Is there a product or service that you would buy if it were accessible and affordable?
Imitation. One way to increase your odds of success is to find a proven business model and replicate it in a different market. Or, consider buying a franchise, where you'll not only have a proven business model, but outside support for your business.

It doesn't matter where the idea comes from. What matters is what you do with it. And no matter how brilliant you think the idea is, you need some external input - a "sanity check", if you will. Even if you don't have the time or money for extensive formal market research or business planning, do the informal research yourself to find out if there's a market for your idea and to assess the viability of your business concept.
You can ask your friends and family, but when you do, make sure to let them know exactly what you are looking for -- honest, detailed feedback on the idea. True friends will be supportive of your ability to succeed, but they will also be willing to be honest with you.

If you make it past the friends and family round and still think you've got a viable business concept, put together a basic business plan. There are extensive resources to help you with this in our Business Plan section. It doesn't have to be incredibly detailed -- you're not going to the bank or investors with it.

Now, think of the three to five most successful entrepreneurs you know. (If you don't know that many, you'd better meet some -- it's going to be very difficult to be a successful entrepreneur yourself without several of them in your network.) Contact them and see if they'll take a look at your business plan and meet you over coffee or lunch (your treat!) to discuss it. Now would also be a good time to find a mentor.

If you feel you need some market research, turn to an online community in which you participate regularly, or find an online community of people who match your target market. Ask a few questions in the discussion forums, preferaby open-ended ones that will get you qualitative information, rather than just quantitative data. It may not be as statistically accurate as formal market research, but if you're not talking about risking huge sums of money, it's probably good enough. The higher the risk, the more formal research you need.

With this approach, you can pursue your passion, tempered by proven practices, and improve your possibilities of prosperity.

choosing a business to start

Two opposite approaches? Or the best of both?
So you've decided to start a business. Maybe you have a brilliant idea, and you're trying to figure out if it's viable or not. Or maybe you're out of work, or just fed up with your current job, and looking for an alternative.
Whatever the circumstances that have brought you to this point, the first question you need to ask yourself is, "Is owning a business right for me?" Are you cut out for entrepreneurship? Not everybody is. The rewards can be great, but so are the risks. And it will change your lifestyle in ways that you may not be prepared for. If you haven't explored this question yet, take a few minutes to review some of the resources in the Becoming an Entrepreneur section.

Once you've decided to walk the entrepreneurial path, the next question to ask yourself is, "What type of business do I want to start?" There are, of course, thousands of choices.

Even things you might think are out of your reach may not be. Short of something like pharmaceuticals that requires enormous research & development budgets, there are virtually no limits: automobile manufacturing, food products, import/export, and many others are open to even the individual entrepreneur. With an infinity of choices, how are you going to decide?

The Traditional Approach

The traditional approach to entrepreneurship is a methodical, scientific process. Generally speaking, the approach consists of researching the market, identifying a need, and creating a business to fill it. More specifically, the steps of the process are:

Select the industry you're interested in working in.
Research the kinds of businesses and various business models within that industry.
Perform market research to see where there is an unmet need -- geographically, pricewise, complementary products and services, etc.
Analyze the competition.
Develop a preliminary business plan for a business to meet that need.
Do some more market research to assess the realistic market potential for your business. Will people buy it?
Revise the business plan and determine your funding requirements.
If needed, seek out lenders or investors.
Start the business.
Needless to say, this is not something you just knock out in a weekend. The most obvious problem to this approach is that it's extremely labor-intensive and potentially expensive to even decide whether or not to go into business. Of course, that time spent on the front end reduces the risk of failure down the road.
The other problem is that you may very well end up realizing far too late that you're doing something you really don't want to be doing, just because you figured you could make some decent money at it. Even when you're the boss, you can still end up feeling stuck and unfulfilled.

Do What You Love, and the Money Will Follow

In recent years, this philosophy has become increasingly popular following the success of the book Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow by Marsha Sinetar. While the approach sounds great, as career coach Dr. Marty Nemko puts it, "Millions of people have followed their passion and still haven't earned enough money to even pay back their student loans, let alone make even a bare middle-class living doing what they love."

It's not the book's fault. In fact, it's a very fine book that will take you through a number of exercises to help you discover your true life purpose and find a number of different ways in which you can fulfill that purpose in your work. It will teach you to distinguish the true inner voice from the flash-in-the-pan ideas that constantly run through your head. And maybe it will help you be one of the few to beat the odds and pursue your dream career.

The problem is that most people don't read the book and go through the intensive self-discovery exercises it prescribes. And when it gets boiled down to a mere slogan, it's more likely to become, "Do what you love until you go broke and can't do it any more."

Some of the common scenarios include:

No one wants to buy it. You're passionate about it, but apparently no one else is. You can't sell people something they don't want to buy.
Someone else already thought of it. You have a great idea, but it's a niche market, and someone's already beat you to it. And if they're better funded, they may be doing it better/faster/cheaper. (It happened to my first company - a mistake I won't repeat!)
A lot of people already thought of it. Highly competitive markets are no fun. I don't care how much you love the business you're in, if you're constantly having to go head-to-head with competitors, it will get old very quickly.
There's more to it than you realized. You underestimated the costs, or the development time, or the incubation period for the marketing to take effect, or the amount of energy required, or the toll it would take on your personal life.
So while pursuing your passion is an admirable goal, doing so to the exclusion of all reason and responsibility isn't. If you have family depending on you for income, you have to consider that, as well.

gamat power!

Healing Power of Gamat
Golden sea cucumber or gamat is a traditional medicine of the Malays. For over 500 years, Malays, particularly of the northern region of the peninsula, use gamat as a folk remedy for various ailments. Royal families and Pulau Langkawis legendary Mahsuri purportedly used air gamat (literally gamat water) and clay as a beauty mask. This is because gamat is also believed to give skin a soft and smooth texture. Nowadays, the use of gamat is more widespread. The Malays boil and drink air gamat to treat cuts, sores and inflammation, peptic ulcers or to revitalise the body. Mothers who had recently given birth also take gamat for quick healing. As a young boy, Prof Hassan Yaacob, 47, had heard about gamat but didnt think much of it. As a researcher with the Department of Pharmacology, Universiti Malaya, he was sceptical about its healing powers. But when he saw how his grandmothers wound had been healed after taking gamat, he decided to do research on it. This 0.3m long gamat is estimated to be between two and five years old.In 1989, I had just returned from England and heard someone groaning in our house in Kota Baru. I learnt that my grandmother was in pain as she had just undergone a laparectomy (operation to remove part of the wall of the abdomen), says Prof Hassan, a PhD holder in clinical pharmacology from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, who at that time had just returned after nine years abroad. Her agony was due to an infected wound. Prof Hassan advised her to get the wound cleaned and re-stitched but she was reluctant. Elderly kampung folk are afraid of going to the hospital. Its taboo to go against their wishes if they do not want to go, he says. A few days later, Prof Hassan found that his grandmothers wound had dried up and she was no longer in pain. She had taken air gamat. He became curious and asked his mother for the recipe for air gamat, a stinky and fishy concoction. Put four to five sea cucumbers in a pot of water and boil for a few hours. The stench of the gamat would stink up the whole house like frying ikan kering (salted fish), says Prof Hassan with a laugh at an interview in his office in Shah Alam.He resigned from Universiti Malaya in 1998 to become an entrepreneur in products based on purified gamat extracts. The Chinese eat sea cucumber as a delicacy, stewing them, stuffing them and adding them to superior seafood soups. Whilst urban Malays do not eat gamat, those from the coastal areas of Pulau Langkawi and Pulau Pangkor enjoy gamat in kerabu (a salad). Tiny pieces of the sea cucumber are blanched, cut into small pieces and tossed with spices. ?When gutting gamat, some nenek (Malay for grandmother) would slurp down the yellowish mucus from the intestine of the sea cucumber with gusto. They claim that it is good for energy, says Prof Hassan squeamishly. When he joined Universiti Malaya as a lecturer in September 1989, Prof Hassan discussed gamat with several lecturers. Gradually, he felt inspired to go out to sea to learn more about it. Prof Hassan Yaacob believes gamat is also a powerful painkiller. In November 1989, his first pilot study on gamat, which the locals also refer to as lintah laut (sea leech), in Pulau Pangkor met with failure. He was in high spirits after collecting some sea cucumber from several dives only to learn from the boat owner that they were not gamat. There are some 29 varieties of sea cucumber in Malaysia and more than 180 varieties worldwide, but not all are gamat. Only one species, Stichopus horrens, or the golden sea cucumber, is gamat, he says. Seven months later, he visited a gamat producer in Pulau Pangkor to find out how gamat was harvested and how its extract was made. In 1990, he obtained a grant for Intensive Research in Priority Areas from the Science, Technology and Environment Ministry to study gamat. The research used more than RM500,000. Prof Hassan went off to Pulau Pangkor again. This time, he discovered a sub-species of sea cucumber, which is reddish with yellow tentacles. In the laboratory, he boiled several kilograms of gamat and partially purified the extract to remove salt and saponin as well as reduce its smell. Saponin, says Prof Hassan, is not good for the body system, especially the heart muscles as it causes constriction of blood vessels, thereby preventing and reducing blood flow. He conducted tests with rabbits using gamat extract. Wounds on rabbits treated with gamat dried up on the second day while those left untreated had infected wounds, and the wounds of rabbits treated with iodine were still wet. Rabbits given gamat extract orally also showed marked improvement. By observing the behaviour of the animals, he concluded gamat is a powerful painkiller. In 1994, Prof Hassan won a gold medal at Mindex for his research on sea cucumber (gamat) as a potential therapeutic, wound-healing and anti-inflammatory agent. In the same year, he was presented with an International Union of Pharmacology Congress Award in Montreal, Canada, for his research on gamat and blood vessels. The award included cash and an air ticket to Montreal to present his research studies. A year later, he applied for a Hitachi Research Fellowship Award (from Hitachi Scholarship Foundation) through Universiti Malaya and got the award based on his outstanding research and contribution in the development of gamat-based products. He says: Once a year, only one award is given out in South-East Asia for scientific research. The award offered me a chance to undertake any scientific research I wanted in Japan for a year. He was given RM10,000 monthly allowance and all research expenses were borne by the foundation. He decided to continue his research on how gamat can activate cell proliferation at the Research Institute for Traditional Medicine in Toyama, Japan. As researcher and external professor to the Medical and Pharmaceutical University of Toyama, Sugitani, Prof Hassan produces articles and publications in academic journals and travels there every three or four months. He also receives professors and supervises students from Japan who consult him in research work on gamat. Only medium-sized gamat should be collected so that the species can continue to multiply. In Japan, gamat saved a life. A Japanese professor decided to test oral gamat on a 24-year-old girl who was in a coma due to the degeneration of her right lung at the University of Kyoto Hospital. Prof Hassan says: Investigations showed that the girls lungs had collapsed and she had a slim chance of survival. She was given antibiotics and steroids but did not respond to treatment. After giving her gamat through intranasal drip, the girl blinked her eyes in less than 24 hours. After five days, she showed signs of recovery. Three weeks later, she was discharged and new X-rays showed that her lung had rejuvenated. After 10 years of research in Universiti Malaya and the Japanese universities, Prof Hassan says that they have discovered the active substance in gamat and the mechanism of its action. Besides its proven efficacy in enhancing the bodys resistance towards various diseases, it is also known that it contains a cell-growth factor that has the ability to accelerate the regeneration of biological cells, bone, collagen and rejuvenate skin, he says. We ve now refined the extract and come up with new generations of scientifically prepared products based on this purified substance. In 1996, Prof Hassan set up Healwell Pharmaceuticals Sdn Bhd in Shah Alam. He is executive chairman and director of Healwell and Eastern Biotech Resources Sdn Bhd, a local company dealing in production and consultation of gamat and anti-ageing skincare products. He is also chairman of Dermatech Sdn Bhd, a joint local and Singaporean company exporting cosmetic products to the United States. The company manufactures health supplements and skin and body care products based on purified gamat extract. Prof Hassan claims that gamat also behaves like an aphrodisiac and has ?anti-ageing properties. To date, the company has 34 gamat products and is exporting them to Japan, Jakarta, Dubai and Bahrain. Three new markets are China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Healwell products, he says, are manufactured using gamat cultivated in two secret locations on Malaysian islands. Cultivation began some five years ago. The sea cucumbers are processed and purified into a white powder before being used in product manufacturing.

what is spirulina?

How Spirulina, Our Immortal Ancestor,Can Change Your Life Now!
Earth's first food produced oxygen so life could evolve
These tiny green spiral coils harvest the energy of the sun, growing a treasure of bioavailable nutrients. This first photosynthetic life form was designed by nature 3.6 billion years ago. Blue green algae produced the oxygen in our atmosphere allowing all higher life forms to evolve. It contains everything life needed to evolve into its rich diversity today.
This immortal life form has renewed itself for billions of years. In the past 20 years it has reintroduced itself to humanity. Spirulina contains billions of years of successful evolutionary wisdom coded in its DNA.
More nutrition per acre than any other foodIt can be grown with brackish water and non-fertile land that cannot be used by other crops. It can produce 20 times more protein per acre than soybeans.
If we can use unusable resources to grow the most powerful food on Earth, we can help stop cutting the last of the primordial forests to grow food. By bringing spirulina into our personal lives, we become part of the solution to improve the health of our planet.
Why is spirulina the most researched algae? Does spirulina contain antioxidants? Phytonutrients? Probiotics? Nutraceuticals? Yes on all counts.
It contains compounds like phycocyanin, polysaccharides and sulfolipids that enhance the immune system. Spirulina contains the most remarkable concentration of functional nutrients ever known in any food, plant, grain or herb.
No other algae, blue-green or chlorella, has been the subject of such intense research over the past 30 years. Thousands of scientific studies. Why? Unlike other algae, we can economically cultivate spirulina all over the globe.
What new discoveries are being revealed?
Several years ago, the National Cancer Institute announced sulfolipids from blue-green algae like spirulina were remarkably active in test tube experiments against the AIDS virus.
In 1993-95, research showed natural polysaccharides in spirulina increased T-cell counts, strengthened the immune system and raised disease resistance in chickens, fish and mice. The animal feed industry is embracing spirulina as a new probiotic to replace overused antiobiotic drugs in animal feeds. In 1994, a Russian patent was awarded for spirulina as a medicine for reducing allergic reactions from radiation in the Children of Chernobyl.
The oldest organisms-the ones who gave us life-are back to revitalize us.They are one of the many solutions we need for restoring our planet in the next 20 years.

the goodness of spirulina

Study Shows Earthrise Spirulina Strengthens Immune System PETALUMA, Calif., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientists at the OsakaInstitute of Public Health in Japan have found that Spirulina promoted theactivation of natural cancer-fighting substances in the body. The study wasreported at the 30th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Immunologyheld inNovember 2000. In this clinical study volunteers over 40 years of age were given 50 ml ofLina Green 21 (a Spirulina extract) and the level of natural cancer-fightingsubstances were measured in their blood. The results showed that Spirulinasignificantly increased the tumor killing ability of Natural Killer Cells andinterferon gamma. The interferon gamma and natural killer cell activity wasincreased 1-2 weeks after administration of Spirulina and the activitycontinued for a surprising 12-24 weeks even after stopping the administrationof Spirulina. "These findings lend further support to the strong immune boostingactivity of Spirulina found in many other similar studies including those byresearchers at University of California, Davis and North Carolina StateUniversity," says Dr. Amha Belay, Senior Vice President of EarthriseNutritionals. "Collectively these studies point to the potential of Spirulinafor use in immunotherapy." In an earlier study reported at the 59th Annual Meeting of the JapaneseCancer Association (October, 2000) the Osaka group also found that theco-administration of Spirulina extract with a bacterial cell wall productsignificantly increased the regression of implanted tumor cells in micecompared to the administration of BCG-CWS alone. More than 80% remission wasobtained with this co-treatment. "Both types of cells might have playedcomplementary role to control cancer effectively," says Dr. Seya, the chiefinvestigator of the study. According to the researchers this new treatmentapproach holds great promise. A cell wall material called BCG-CWS, derived from certain bacteria, hasbeen commonly used in patients with lung cancer surgery. The administration ofBCG-CWS resulted in the activation of one type of cancer-fighting substancecalled cytotoxic T-cells (CTL), which showed a moderate success. Theco-administration of Spirulina extract with BCG-CWS increased the activationof other types of natural cancer-fighting substances called natural killercells that work in concert with CTL's to give an enhanced effect. Earthrise Nutritionals became the first American company to introducespirulina as a natural food in 1979, leading the green food revolution. Today, the company markets its popular trademarked products in the USA and in30 countries around the world out of its sales and marketing offices inPetaluma, California. Enhanced Oxygen
Oxygen is vital to the healthy functioning of our body— it fuels all of its systems, fires its chemical reactions, and eliminates wastes and toxins. Cellfood enhances the critical bioavailability of oxygen to the body through its unique ability to 'dissociate' water molecules within the body— resulting in the release of abundant nascent oxygen, and hydrogen, directly to the cells.

Mel Franklin, Oklahoma
My name is Mel Franklin and until recently I was a severe asthmatic suffering as well from emphysema and chronic bronchitis originating from fighting a forest fire while serving in the U.S. Air Force. My condition over the years was gradually getting worse to the extent that for the past several months I was using 5 rescue inhalers every 90 days as well as 2 other stabilizing inhalers that I was taking 4 puffs 3 times a day.
The first of January this year, I received my allotted medications and by the end of the month my condition had worsened to the extent that I was waking every 1 1/2 to 2 hours every night unable to breathe and had to take several puffs of albuterol to start breathing again in order to get back to sleep. During the day I was constantly sucking on an inhaler as it seemed that I was perpetually short of breath and as a result of these happenings, I was down to one rescue inhaler.
I requested additional inhalers and they renewed the prescription adding one more rescue inhaler and increasing all other medications to maximum dosage as well as putting me back on theophiline that I had not taken for 2 1/2 years.
I was introduced to the products the first part of February and started taking CELLFOOD right away and a few days later, upon hearing about others who suffered pulmonary illness much as myself, had effected a restoration to health in a matter of weeks taking CELLFOOD Silica so I said "That's for me".
I went in for my regular check up March third. The lab was first and later I was seen by the doctor who was in awe when she noted that there was no railing or wheezing in my chest and that I was breathing with no shortness of breath. I told her what I was taking and she was very impressed saying that she would check it out. She informed me that the lab report had not come in and she would call me.
When I arrived home, there was a message on my machine stating the lab report showed my theophiline level was lower than anticipated and to discontinue use of it and if I had any question to call. I called and confirmed the message as well as asking about giving up the inhalers. I was told to continue their use so I said thank you and hung up not mentioning the fact that I had not taken a puff on one for over a week. I went in for a scheduled breathing test on the twenty fourth of March starting out with a painful blood-gas test followed by sd breathing. Oxygen content prior to this date was 60%, which is average for an asthmatic. This time it was 70%, a marked increase. The sd breathing had increased from 350 to 415. Quite an improvement.
To this day, I have not been short of breath and have not taken any medication, but I am still taking the products.

Josiane Chami, Switzerland
From an American dietetician, I heard of Cellfood two months ago and ordered it in Italy since it is the closest distributor for Switzerland. I started taking Cellfood mid-January this year, that is approximately 6 weeks ago.
I am 63 years old, recently divorced after having been married for 40 years and I am the PA to the Chairman of a company; I work 10 to twelve hours a day and I spend a good two hours on the road daily to and from work in heavy traffic. All this to describe a lifestyle that has been the cause of a lot of pressure and stress. Consequently, when I started taking Cellfood, I was suffering from constant abdominal pains, asthma, cramps in my legs at night, fatigue and at times, I had difficulties concentrating.
The first three weeks were disappointing. At first, I felt even more tired and run down than before, had no appetite and was nauseous all the time. One morning, some 10 days into taking Cellfood, I got up only to see the room spinning around me and fell down on my bed. When I finally managed to stand, I went to the kitchen and took 21 drops of Cellfood in a glas of water. An hour later, I felt fit and managed to drive to work. A week later, my tonsils started swelling and my throat was covered with white spots. I poured a few drops of Cellfood on a cotton swab and lightly touched each white spot, that dispappeared almost instantly. However, the pain remained for about one week.
Soon after that, I started feeling a lot better. Almost no more asthma, no more cramps at night, my digestion was much better and my energy level had gone up one hundred percent, my skin looks smoother and the dark circles under my eyes have almost disappeared; my memory has also improved a lot which is very important in my work.
I have given your address to my son who lives in San Diego and told him to get some Cellfood for himself and for me next time he visits me in Switzerland. In the meantime, if this testimony deserves one free bottle of Cellfood, you can mail it to the following address :
Regards,
Josiane Chami, Switzerland

cellfood

What is CELLFOOD and why is it so extraordinary?CELLFOOD is a proprietary ionic fomula containing dissolved oxygen, electrolytes, 78 ionic minerals, 34 enzymes and 17 amino acids— which provides an unsurpassed oxygenating source, and nutritional delivery system, to every cell of the body. CELLFOOD's unique structure oxygenates and feeds the cells— cleaning and 'tuning up' our body's systems all day long.
Why is this so important?Oxygen aids the functioning of every body system. That's why aerobic exercise is so important to our good health. Yet even when we exercise regularly (and most Americans do not), we are not getting optimum levels of oxygen into our bodies. Why? Because ours is an increasingly oxygen-deficient environment— filled with chemicals, exhaust fumes, industrial emissions, and burned fossil fuels. When scientists analyzed the oxygen content of air bubbles trapped in ice-core drillings at the Antarctic, they found that the earth's atmosphere was comprised of between 38% and 50% oxygen not so long ago. Over the years, increasing pollution, mass destruction of the rain forests, and the reduction of other natural producers of oxygen, have decreased the level of oxygen in our atmosphere from above 38% to below 20%, especially in highly populated industrialized areas.

Parexel, based in Waltham, Massachusetts, also failed to have a contract in place with the drug's developer, TeGenero AG, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said today in an e-mailed statement. There was also no formal system to provide 24-hour medical cover, and Parexel didn't complete medical checks of patients, the London-based agency said.
TeGenero, a six-year-old biotechnology company based in Wuerzburg, Germany, hired Parexel to test the product, a laboratory-produced antibody designed to treat arthritis, leukemia and multiple sclerosis. The medicine acts on a biological switch in the body's immune system that no drug had previously targeted, closely held TeGenero said.
``We are satisfied that the adverse incidents which occurred were not as a result of any errors made in the manufacture of TGN1412, its formulation, dilution or administration to trial participants,'' Professor Kent Woods, MHRA chief executive officer, said in the statement.

AIDS

May 25, (foodconsumer.org) - The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, first originated in wild chimpanzees in a quite little corner in southern Cameroon, according to an international team of scientists. It is believed that people who hunted chimpanzees were the first to contract the virus. The first cases of AIDS were seen in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo by 1930. However scientists say that the rareness of the symptoms coupled with the fact that they are not identical in all cases delayed the naming of the virus by another 50 years. The current research team comprising scientists from universities of Nottingham, Montpellier and Alabama have been working on tracing the source of the virus since the last ten years. It has not been easy work by any means since trackers were employed to forage deep into the dense jungles for collecting fresh feces of wild apes. In all scientists scoured 1,300 samples. A virus called SIVcpz (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus from chimps) was believed to have been the precursor to HIV, but this virus had only been found in a few captive animals. The current study, which is to be published in the journal Science, has been able to trace a natural reservoir of the virus.

bird flu

4.20pm Friday May 26, 2006
Health experts in an Indonesian village hit by an outbreak of bird flu have asked more than 30 people to quarantine themselves to contain any potential further spread.
World Health Organisation (WHO) spokesman Dick Thompson said people who had close contact with any of seven relatives who have died since last month in the village of Kubu Sembilang were being monitored for signs of illness.
Mr Thompson added that contact with an infected bird was now considered the likely cause of the H5N1 avian flu outbreak.
His comments came a day after another WHO spokesman, Peter Cordingly, said the UN body was "stumped" about the original source of the infection.
Mr Thompson stressed there was evidence the virus had not mutated into a form that could be more easily spread from humans to humans.
He said samples of the virus taken from the cluster of victims had been sequenced in a Hong Kong laboratory and had not shown any signs of mutation into a more contagious form.

google news

SAN FRANCISCO May 25, 2006 (AP)— Google on Thursday confirmed a long-rumored deal that will bundle some of its software on Dell Inc.'s personal computers, providing the online search engine leader with another potentially potent weapon in its fierce rivalry with Microsoft Corp.
"It's a really big deal for both companies," Google CEO Eric Schmidt said Thursday at an Internet industry conference in Las Vegas. "It's very good for them and very good for us."
Financial terms weren't disclosed, an indication that the amount being paid isn't large enough to affect either of the companies' finances. When the negotiations between the two companies were first reported nearly four months ago, Google reportedly was considering paying Dell up to $1 billion to load its software over a three-year period.

Supreme state attorney denies interference in biofuel scandal

Brno- The inspection check concerning the work of detectives in the corruption case with the production of biofuel has shown that no one has influenced its investigation, Frantisek Tlapak, the spokesman for Supreme State Attorney Renata Vesecka told CTK today, referring to her.
Vesecka has arrived at the conclusion on the basis of the documents on the serious case with a deal involving millions she had asked to study, Tlapak said.
"The inspection check has ruled out any interference in the criminal case," Tlapak said.
Documents have suggested that the Municipal State Attorney's Office in Prague is rightly and intensively performing supervision of the investigation of the case, Tlapak said.
One of the investigating versions reportedly connects the case with the recent murder of businessman Frantisek Mrazek.
The case concerns the planned state orders for the production of biofuel. Lobbyist from Olomouc, north Moravia, Frantisek Vybiral, features as the main suspect in the case. The businessmen who were interested in the planned transactions with biofuel bribed civil servants and other people through him.
